My nightmares as a CNA

I always wanted to be an employee of New-York Presbyterian Hospital because of its reputation. On March of 2008, I applied for a nurse technician position, when I went for the interview the hring manager said he only had a nursing assistant position. We laughed throughout the interview, I accepted the CNA position. I was excited to work with nurses. The first day I stepped foot on the unit (6Central) I experienced a taste of animosity, a week later the nurses started to make catty remarks. After the week training they paired me with a nurse who is a known bully and she had just gotten her nursing license after working for years as a nursing assistant in the pediatric unit. She put the second bad taste in my mouth. The manager was new to the position, he was a follower and he was more into his private life, when I reported to him the unfair treatments I received from the nurse,he brought it to her attention and left it as that. The first month I received 15 shining stars, I didn't even know what they were at first. It is an employee recognition program to formally distinguish empolyees that go above and beyond expectations of general job responsibilities. My name was display inside of a glass cabinet, everyone was complimenting me. The second month, I received another 15. The nursing staff became very jealous, I became the most hated employee on the unit, as a results. The nurse who was in charge of the box in which the shining stars were stored, got rid of all mine. Patients and their loved ones used to approached the manager and complimented him for having me on the unit, some patients asked for my photographs according to them they wanted to wake up in the morning looking at my face. Let me make this clear... I am not a drop-dead gorgeous woman, nor a model type. I don't have a nursing license,I am older than the majority of the nurses on that unit. Anyone could go to college and obtain professional degrees, but the qualities I possess are authentic I treated each and everyone of them as individual as opposed to statistic. on the other hand the nurses are flat, cold, joyless humorless they have license to only administer narcotics. The 30 beds acute care unit serves the needs of patients with neurological disorders, therefore their safety and dignity should be preserved. As a result of the nurse's lack of empaty and profesionalism, the unit has the highest level of falls, and patients usually left saturated with stools and urine. I faithfully shared my concerns with the manager and the nursing director on a constant basis, but they chose to put a higher value on the survey, they wanted me to resign. I made every effort to emplement the hospital's core values, but the nurses undermined that potential. The hospital have the best surgeons known to get excellent results with patients undergoing difficult operations. Unfortunately the nursing staff is a disgrace to the profession, they ignored their responsibilities as ultimate healers, some patient' deteriorate rapidly after contacting MRSA following surgery. I openly expressed my discontentment, which put me on A list for ternination. My rights were being violated, I sent an email to the vice president of the hospital, that letter was forwarded to the nursing director who is pure "Poison" The manager moved to San Francisco, they trained a bedside nurse from a different floor to replace him, she was very nice when she thought she was acting. After she was established, she became my worst nightmare, she bullied me as if her livelihood depended on it,the pressure became overwhelmingly excrutiating. I was being singled out, treated differently. Everyone could get away with murder,if I made a mistake however trivial-action was taken against me. I was verbally abused by co-workers, I was always subjected to diciplinary procedures, with verbal or written warnings imposed for fabricated reason and without proper investigation. They all share the same brain, therefore no one was on my side. The hospital is ununionized and employee relations misapplies the tools of traditional resolution for example, one of the nursing asssistant who has coached my patients to write complaint letters against me nearly physically assaulted me twice in one year, when I reported the incident to Employee relations, they held a private meeting with her, and held another one with both of us in the manager's office where I was treated me like the predator. I build an external shell as a defense mechanism, that developed a sense of detachement that allowed me to accept my surroundings for what they are. When they realized I am not a quitter, the bullying became even more unbearable. The nurses who were already lazy became lazier, the workload became inequitably distributed, the nursing director stopped providing enough staffing on days I worked, which compromised the care of the acutely ill patients. They injected large amount of "Lactulose" into my patient's feeding tubes which gave them uncontrollable diarrhea, They assigned me to 15 patients which is against JCAHO standards, the nurses neglected their patients, that created an atmosphere of chaos, I struggled with patients who were hard to maneuver, because the nurses wouldn't help. One young mother nearly loses her life because the nurse wouldn't help me clean her, she was so saturated with urine, her bedding needed to be change, I called for assistance because she was not only attached to different wires, she was heavy, paralyzed and unable to help. When no one showed up and she was shivering real bad I gathered strength and clean her, I mistakenly reconnected the wires into the wrong ports, the blood backflowed and nearly suffocated her. The nursing director who is the watchdog for the nurses quickly issued a warning to me for performing tasks that were not in my scope of practice. I sent a letter to HR explaining the circumstances under which I was forced to performed outside of my practice, politically the warning was overturned. The bullying never stopped, the entire nursing staff hopped on the banwagon. I remained sane because I cultivated a positive aura I therefore never claim the chaos my own. Those nurses are compulsive liars, Jekyll and Hyde nature. Innocent and charming in front of their superiors and others. vicious, vindictive ans spiteful in private, only me their(target)saw both sides. They bring their baggage to work which impaired their performances. God has helped me deal with life's adversities and I recover very quickly from them. Through all the calamities I kept a positive attitude, I showed up everyday fired up and professional, unlike some of them who came to work looking like"Crap" because the unit deals with massive amount of "Poops" I set the bar very high, by wearing professional outfit and my color combination was chosen for the nurses to wear. The nurses director was trying to find a reason to fire me, they erased data and blamed me for not entering them, they added lateness to my records even though I usually arrived on the floor 15 minutes early. The nurses stalked me constantly. the do-nothing manager just turned a deaf ear. I continued to be a strong support for my patients and their loved ones. I prepared them mentally and emotionally for procedures. I laughed I sang and talked to them even the unconcious ones.and made the stay enjoyable to those in possession of their faculties. The hospital claims to put "patients first", based on my acurate and precise observation, the exact opposite is true. patients were calling for extended amount of time for bathroom assistance, they either fell urinated or pooped on the bed, the hospital is very clean but inside the rooms some of the patients smelled like rotting flesh. I struggled for 3 years, but that group is like metastatic cancer, I succumbed in May 9th. I got fired for misusing bereavement days. They never had a legitimate reason to fire me even though they wanted to fet rid of me, the reason...They don't want to pay unemployment benefits., but based on the fact I misused 2 of them, it is considered violation of hospital policy, even though there was never any warning, they used it to deny my unemployment benefits. One of the nurses was so intoxicated that she gave Oxycontin to the wong patient. She lives across the street from the hospital, she was spotted many times drunk and unable to find her way home. That same piece of work bullied me relentlessly until my termination.
Here's the real malice that is lurking behind the number one hospital according to News world reports. No matter how lousy a nursing assistant is, if the nurses don't make any complaint against that nursing assistant, the manager nor the director wont give a "Rat" behind, but if for any reason the nurses feels overshadowed by a nursing assistant, they will worked in harmony to create drama and trauma for that worker. Nursing was designed for people who care, but at that hospital the nursing license was issued to people who don't give a Shit!!
